Oh my gosh, you have to check out this book called “Wrecking Crew: The Really Bad News Griffith Park Pirates”! It was written by John Albert, who used to play drums in Bad Religion back in the day. The book is all about this super cool amateur baseball team called the Griffith Park Pirates. And get this, the team is made up of a bunch of misfits from the “Hollywood underclass” – like junkies, unemployed musicians, and actors. But guess what? They actually find success and happiness on the field, even though they’re dealing with their own personal demons off the field. It’s such a wild ride!
And here’s the best part – the book got amazing reviews and even caught the attention of Paramount. They wanted to turn it into a movie! But, unfortunately, the option expired. But don’t worry, Anonymous Films (you know, the ones who made “Being John Malkovich” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) swooped in and snagged the option. So there’s still hope for a movie adaptation!
Oh, and there’s this chapter in the book called “Star Extinguished” where John talks about his time in Bad Religion. It was during the early ’80s, when he was going through some tough times with drugs and depression. But he joined the band as their new drummer, even though it wasn’t their peak popularity. It was like joining one of those old doo-wop groups that tour around, you know? But with the original singer still leading the way and a bunch of awesome songs, they still had a dedicated fanbase. John even has a videotape of one of their shows where they played to a huge crowd of three thousand kids in this old boxing arena. And let me tell you, it was an epic performance!
So yeah, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves baseball, punk rock, or just a good ol’ underdog story. It’s got it all!
