Brett: “Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this! So, the song is actually about this guy named Job from the Old Testament. He was like the most righteous dude ever, seriously. But then the devil comes along and tells God that people are all bad. And God’s like, ‘Nah, not true.’ So the devil challenges God and says, ‘Prove it, give me an example.’ And God’s like, ‘Look at Job, he’s super righteous.’ So the devil bets that he can corrupt Job just like anyone else, and they make a deal. And get this, it’s God’s way of rewarding the one good guy on the planet! But then God turns his back on Job, the one guy who was actually good. Like, what?! That’s not God, that’s just religion being all messed up. It’s like saying no matter how good you are, God will abandon you. And this is the basis for the whole Judaeo-Christian religion, can you believe it? No wonder the world is so messed up! They say the story of Job is the saddest story ever told, so it seemed perfect to start a song called Sorrow.”
In 2010, when asked about the line “Or when the only true messiah rescues us from ourselves / It’s easy to imagine,” Greg Graffin explained that it means we are our own saviors and the meaning of life comes from within us.
Now, get this, the music video for Sorrow was actually shot on the same day as the video for Broken. How crazy is that? It was directed by Boo! and our talented friends at Mindfield came up with the concept and produced it. The performance footage was shot beautifully in 35mm on this amazing set they built. And the rest of the video was created using special effects by the Mindfield people, who started with just a few still photographs. Can you believe what technology can do? The video really captures the vibe and mood of the song perfectly.”
