In 1998, Bad Religion founded the Bad Religion Research Fund to offer a research grant for field research. They’ve always questioned society and used pop-culture and media to do so. They believe in promoting questioning and self-motivated discovery. The lead singer, Greg Graffin, has a strong background in science and wants to promote natural-history education. They’re funding the scholarship themselves and will choose the recipients as a band committee. The guidelines in 1998 stated that the award carries a $3000 stipend and will be given to the most innovative research proposal. Any university or high-school student can apply. The purpose is to promote field studies in cultural or physical sciences. The band members will be the judges. In the early 2000s, the guidelines were enhanced. Only one award will be granted annually, and the proposed research should be completed within 5 months. The amount of the award is between $3000 and $5000. Priority will be given to applicants with a project budget within that range. Only field-oriented research will be considered. The application should include a cover page, introduction, description of the proposed research, budget, significance, and research summary. The recipients in previous years were Lena Sharon Nicolai, Will Reeves, and Walter Fuller. As of March 2000, the Bad Religion Research Fund for 2000 was planned to be announced in June, but it was postponed due to other priorities. They hope to raise enough money to fund more proposals in the future. In 2002, they were still working on ironing out the details of the fund.
