Jay: “Man, back in the day, those bands were totally punk! Even Devo was punk! But now, I have no idea what punk even is. I’m not into most of it anymore. It all sounds the same, just like us. Haha!”

Greg: “Yeah, English punk died in the late ’70s or early ’80s. Maybe ’82 at the latest. But American punk never died, thanks to bands like Bad Religion. And there aren’t many bands like them.”

Jay: “Punk used to be so specific. If you got on stage and screamed into a megaphone while smashing a typewriter with a sledgehammer, you were punk. But now, you’re labeled as art-rock or something.”

In 1991, when asked if punk rock changes the world, Brett answered, “Slightly.”

Jay: “It’s definitely changed the fashion world.”

Bobby: “Yeah, it’s changed people’s attitudes towards music. It’s opened their minds. And it’s paved the way for other types of music.”

Greg: “Nah, I don’t think so. Punk rock hasn’t really made a big impact. But if it can make people think a little and maybe make them happier or better able to handle problems, then it’s made a small difference.”

Hetson: “It’s definitely shaken up the music industry.”

Brett: “When I was a kid, being punk meant I was a misfit. But now, being punk doesn’t mean anything to me. I’m not punk.”

Brian: “By 1985, punk had already lost its sense of community and danger. Once runway models started wearing leather jackets with studs and movies like Sid and Nancy came out, it was all blown out of proportion. The only reason people are saying it’s being destroyed now is because they’re 14. Punk rock is mainstream now, and we can’t change that. We should focus on liking bands for the right reasons, not just because of their label. Take the time to really explore music, like we used to do when we were punk.”

I’ve been lurking on that site for over 20 years and if you’re into Bad Religion as much as I am, I’m sure you’re familiar. If you are not, go there right now and never come back to this site again. You should, and I totally understand.
