Oh my gosh, you won’t believe what happened with this song! So Brett was going through his computer files before the pre-production meeting and he stumbled upon this half-finished song that he didn’t think was going anywhere. But when he listened to it, he thought it sounded pretty awesome, so he decided to bring it to the studio just in case. The band recorded the music even though it wasn’t fully finished.
Then, in the studio, Brett and Greg started brainstorming ideas for the lyrics and the song concept changed a couple of times before they settled on “Dharma and The Bomb.” Brett wrote the lyrics and melody right there in the studio and wanted it to have a California surf vibe. But poor Greg, being from Wisconsin, couldn’t quite nail the sound Brett wanted. So Brett did a temporary vocal to show him how it should sound, but Greg just couldn’t get it right. That’s when Brett made the bold decision to sing the song himself!
Now, let’s talk about the meaning of the song. According to Jay, it’s kind of about terrorists having a dirty bomb and India having an atomic bomb. Pretty intense stuff!
And guess what? Jay absolutely loves this song! He thinks it’s one of the best songs ever by Bad Religion. He remembers when they finished recording and he got the first copy of the song. He called up Brett and told him that “Dharma and The Bomb,” along with the next two songs, “Hello Cruel World” and “Vanity,” were the best few minutes of Bad Religion he had ever heard.
Wow, what a journey this song went through! It’s definitely a special one for the band.
