Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this awesome story! So, back in 1987, Brett, the coolest studio engineer ever, teamed up with his partner Donnell Cameron to set up their own studio. And guess what? This studio would later become the early home of Epitaph, the legendary record label!
But wait, it gets even better. While working at the studio, called Westbeach, Brett was a total workaholic. He would put in crazy hours, like 70 to 90 hours a week! Can you imagine? He would even work 16-hour days, 7 days a week. Talk about dedication!
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Westbeach actually changed locations a few times. The first location was just a room inside another studio on Pico Boulevard. Some amazing albums were recorded there, like Thelonious Monster, Little Kings, Spaghetti Western, and possibly the first L7 record.
But then, they moved to a new spot on Vista del Mar. This is where they recorded albums like Suffer and Generator. And get this, most of the bands on Epitaph did their early work there too. It was like a hub of creativity and rock ‘n’ roll!
Oh, and let’s not forget about the third and final location of Westbeach. It was in this awesome building on Hollywood Boulevard, known as the Producers Workshop. Pink Floyd finished The Wall there, and Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours. How cool is that?
Sadly, on May 12, 2010, Westbeach Recorders went out of business. But don’t worry, Boulevard Recording now calls that place home. And guess what? In 2019, they’re even building Westbeach One! It’s like a new chapter in the Westbeach legacy.
Oh, and one more thing. Westbeach Two is now a murder museum. Yeah, you heard that right. It’s like something out of a crazy movie!
So there you have it, the wild and exciting story of Westbeach. It’s a place where music history was made, and where dreams came true.
