OMG, you won’t believe this awesome collaboration! The Vandals were actually the first band on Epitaph, just like Bad Religion. They released their debut EP Peace Thru Vandalism. And get this, Bobby knows Warren Fitzgerald, their guitar player, from way back in Warren’s Oingo Boingo days. How cool is that?
But wait, there’s more! Brett from Bad Religion did backup vocals for Anarchy Burger (Hold the Government). How rad is that? And guess what? The song was actually inspired by Jay from Bad Religion. So, here’s the story: Jay drove the Vandals out to Arizona to play with TSOL and JFA. On the way back, they stopped at a Stuckey’s restaurant. And that’s when Joe, being the hilarious guy he is, blurted out “I’ll have an anarchy burger, hold the government” to the lady behind the counter. It was just a silly joke to make Jay laugh. But Jay laughed so hard that Joe went home and immediately turned it into a whole song. How epic is that?
Oh, and have you heard about their album Live Fast, Diarrhea? It’s got this song called Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious where they actually copy the beginning part of Fuck Armageddon… This Is Hell. And to top it off, they close the song with a segment from We’re Only Gonna Die. Talk about mixing it up and keeping things interesting!
And let’s not forget what they think about Bad Religion. According to Josh Freese, they’re in the 2% of bands smart enough to know what they’re talking about. And Joe Escalante thinks Bad Religion is just genius. He believes they grab any word ending in T.I.O.N. from the dictionary and combine it with terrific music. How clever is that? Even though they don’t do it themselves, Bad Religion is one of Joe’s favorite bands.
I don’t know about you, but all this collaboration and admiration between The Vandals and Bad Religion has got me super excited!
