In a 2004 interview, Jay expressed his belief that the band was nearing its end before Brett returned. When asked if they would have made another record if Brett hadn’t come back, Jay replied, “No way. I wouldn’t have made another record. I was ready to quit. We were dropped by both Sony and Warner Brothers, Bobby quit, and no one was happy. I was done. I was like, ‘Forget it, I’m finished with this, it’s just not working.’”
Brian chimed in, saying, “You know, when you think about the longevity of a punk band, it’s never been tested. I’m now looking at the metal model: I see bands that are 10 years older than us, still relevant to their fans, and still seem to genuinely enjoy what they’re doing. I realize it’s possible to continue along those lines. But let me tell you, we’re not interested in becoming a heritage act. If we can’t keep expanding on what we’re doing, if the art is dead and it’s just a reenactment, no one will want to do it. And if it’s not fun anymore, then it’s probably time to find a better job.”
Brett added his perspective, saying, “I think it would be better for the band to transition into a different mode rather than just saying ‘We quit.’ They don’t have to stop. I think they should consider touring as a sustainable resource to keep it going forever. Instead of doing world tours, they could focus on playing special shows and fewer shows. They could hit the major markets less frequently and make each show an event.”
