The song is all about these amazing writers who were a bit crazy, which is kind of ironic. Like, why are so many brilliant writers also totally nuts? Brett really looks up to Jack Kerouac, who was part of the Beat Generation along with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Ken Kesey. They were all about this cool poetry and literature movement in the 50’s and 60’s. But Jack got super depressed after his friend Neal Cassady died and ended up drinking himself to death. It’s like that saying “Curiosity killed the cat,” but maybe caring too much was what did Jack in, hence “Caringosity killed the Kerouac cat.” Brett was totally inspired by Elvis Costello when he wrote this song, and it’s one of his favorites. The video was directed by Gore Verbinski. Greg used to sing a different version of the lyrics live, like “I wanna know why Gurewitz cracked, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction” or “I wanna know, where Brett gets his crack, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.” The single came out in 1994 and made it to number 28 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
