Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this! The ex-frontman and composer of The Cars, who Greg absolutely adored, is none other than Ric! And guess what? Ric produced The Gray Race, but that’s not all. He also produced The Bad Brains’ “Rock for Light” album, Weezer’s self-titled album, and Suicide’s album from New York. Can you believe it? And on top of all that, he’s married to supermodel Paulina!
But here’s the really cool part. As a producer, Ric is not your average guy. Greg said he’s a visionary, which is awesome. Most producers are just technical, but not Ric. He actually had a vision when he heard the demo tapes. He focused on the overall sound of the album and made it something special.
And get this, when Ric was asked about being a producer, he said, “I’m not even a fucking producer; I’m a reducer.” How cool is that? His job is to get to the essence of the music. He wanted the guitars to be full and thick, and he wanted the album to have a real punch. He believed that this band deserved to be played on the radio, and he was right. The record is so well thought out, with amazing lyrics and a heavy, pumping sound. It definitely deserves to be heard by everyone.
Ric had a unique approach to recording the album. He told the band to go into the studio and work on the songs individually, putting down their ideas wherever they wanted. Then, he sat down with all the recordings and picked out what he wanted for the album. It was a surprise for Brian, who didn’t even know what he had played on until The Gray Race was finished.
