Brett: “OMG, indie labels are so much cooler than majors! No doubt about it. But, like, here’s the thing. Most indie labels aren’t non-profit, right? So, if they become successful and their awesome music gets super popular, they’ll eventually become kinda like a major label. Look at Virgin Records, it started out as a small indie and then BAM! It sold for $750 million and became part of EMI. But before that, it was still indie, you know? So, it makes you wonder, what even is indie? Like, if the next NOFX record goes multi-platinum, like Nirvana’s Nevermind, even if nothing really changes at Epitaph, wouldn’t we be like a major label with all the bad stuff they’re known for? And if that’s the case, why? What’s so bad about major labels? If it’s just that they put out crappy music, well, that’s not really fair to say that Epitaph is any different. But if the measure of a label is that it can’t sell a ton of records, then yeah, you know what I mean? I think about this a lot and it’s so exciting!”
