Oh my gosh, you won’t believe it! According to Bobby, Against the Grain was the album where the harmonies really took off. And guess what? Jay said that in the early 90s, The Adolescents were the kings of harmonies. They used three part harmonies all the time and it was amazing. BR even saw them live and thought they were brilliant, which gave them the confidence to try it themselves. Can you believe it? Jay said that once you step out of the punk rock world, you realize that the members of BR were actually listening to bands like the Beach Boys with their crazy 17-part harmonies, and artists like Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe who did background vocals. So it wasn’t even that hard for them to think, “Hey, why not use harmonies in our music too?” They always wanted to make sure that whatever they did in the studio, they could also do live. They didn’t want to go completely crazy. So doing three part harmonies in the studio wasn’t absurd at all, because they could totally pull it off live. It actually became their signature sound. Isn’t that cool? Jay never really noticed other bands doing it until one day he heard a band that sounded like them, but it wasn’t them. And he realized that it was all because of the background vocals.
