Back when the band was just a trio, made up of Greg Graffin, Jay Ziskrout, and Brett Gurewitz, they were still nameless but full of excitement. They wrote their first three songs: Sensory Overload, World War III, and Slaves. Graffin recalls, “At first, we didn’t really care. But it actually sounded pretty good – melodic, with loud guitar and drums, and my vocals. Those initial songs were worked out in that unique format, but we had to admit that it would probably sound even better with some low end. That’s when we brought in Jay Bentley, mainly because he was one of three potential candidates.” These were the songs that they put on a tape and gave to Jay Bentley in November or December of 1979, when they asked him to join as the bassist.
