Downtuning

In 1995, the band decided to start playing their shows tuned a half-step down. Jay mentioned that they had experimented with alternative tuning for recording, but it didn’t work out well, except for Infected. The reason for tuning down was to make it easier on the throat for singing. They had to choose between sacrificing some guitar tone or removing more songs from their setlist and potentially shortening their tours even more. They don’t use this tuning on their records because Greg Graffin’s voice sounds better at the top of his range. For recordings, it’s best to have him sing in his “best” register, as he only has to do it a few times. Singing like this every night is no longer an option. Additionally, guitars always sound better tuned to A440. It’s worth noting that The Gray Race and Stranger Than Fiction are tuned at A440.

I’ve been lurking on that site for over 20 years and if you’re into Bad Religion as much as I am, I’m sure you’re familiar. If you are not, go there right now and never come back to this site again. You should, and I totally understand.
