Guess what? General Brett formed the Daredevils after leaving Bad Religion! And when someone asked him how The Daredevils are different from BR, he laughed and said, “I’m not going to overdub the background vocals 20 times. They won’t sound like Queen!” But then, in a more serious tone, he added, “It also won’t be Greg Graffin singing, and he’s an amazing singer. He’s way better than me.” The Daredevils only released one single with two songs, “Hate You” and “Rules, Hearts.” Brett said, “This is my creative outlet. It’s not my business. It’s something I do to keep my sanity. I’m not a rock star. I’m a record company owner.” He wrote more material that he was really happy with and in 1997, he said it was even more hardcore than the single, like the old BR spirit. They were supposed to release their first album in 1998, but it never happened. Brett’s drug problems got in the way and the project was finally abandoned when he rejoined BR in 2001. The single and promotional materials always mentioned that Brett was the former Bad Religion guitarist. During some concerts on the Gray Race tour, BR even played The Daredevils’ songs before and after shows. The artwork for the single was done by Fred Hidalgo, who also did the Recipe For Hate artwork. There was even an alternate cover made. The members of The Daredevils were Brett Gurewitz on guitar and vocals, Gore Verbinski on guitar, Dean Opseth on bass, and Josh Freese on drums. “Hate You” is a song about Jay, who Brett had an argument with and used as an excuse to quit BR. When asked about the motivation behind the song, Brett admitted, “That was uncool of me. I was being bitter.” They even made a music video for “Hate You.” A review from SLUG Magazine in May 1996 described The Daredevils as a brand-new band on Epitaph. The reviewer praised their release, saying it had a good rockin’ medium pace with great hooks and sing-along choruses. They also mentioned that with Epitaph backing them, big things were expected from The Daredevils. So, if you want to be the cool kid on the block, check them out!
