Oh my gosh, you won’t believe how awesome this is! So, Greg Graffin said that the whole point of the album was to challenge the structure of science and art. How cool is that? And Bobby Schayer said that this album really took their harmonies to the next level. It was experimental and showed off their songwriting skills. They were really able to find their own sound and style.
When they were recording the album, they tried out some new techniques. They used this old console called Soundcraft 2400, which gave the guitars and drums a great sound. They even had these compressors called Dynamites for the snare and kick drum. And they used a bunch of different microphones to get the perfect sound. They even put the guitars in a coat closet with foam to get a tight guitar sound. How creative is that?
But let me tell you, this album took a long time to make. They were second-guessing themselves a lot. But all that hard work paid off because when it was released, it sold like crazy. It was their first album to sell 100,000 copies and by 1992, they had already sold about 90,000 copies. Can you believe it?
And the fans loved it too. It was consistently voted as their best album. In fact, in 1998, it was ranked number 30 in Alternative Press’ Top 90 of the 90’s. That’s pretty impressive, right?
They even had some demos before they recorded the album. Some were just Greg and others were recorded with Brett. They had songs like “Operation Rescue,” “Modern Man,” “Walk Away,” “God Song,” “21st Century (Digital Boy),” “Quality Or Quantity,” “Faith Alone,” and of course, “Against The Grain.” How cool would it be to hear those demos?
And let’s not forget about the artwork. Joy Aoki did an amazing job with the cover. She also did artwork for The Offspring and Down By Law. The original painting used to hang at Epitaph, but now it’s part of The Punk Rock Museum. How awesome is that?
Oh, and get this. After the album was released, Roy Bittain, who plays keyboard for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, walked into Epitaph and told Jay and Brett that they should re-release the album. He even offered to produce it and re-write the songs
